Patong is the hub of tourist life: restaurants, malls, massage, night bars and every water activity. It is the easiest place to be without transport, and the busiest. It suits people who come for company and activity rather than solitude.
Kata and Karon: the balance
Kata and neighbouring Kata Noi offer a gentle entry and good cafes while staying noticeably calmer than Patong. Karon is longer and more spacious, with a wide band of white sand. Both are popular with families and long-stayers.
Bang Tao, Surin and Kamala: north and premium
- Bang Tao — the island’s longest beach, with beach clubs, villas and Laguna nearby.
- Surin — compact and green, with premium hotels and a calm crowd.
- Kamala — the family format: quieter than Patong with all the infrastructure at hand.
- The airport is closest from here — 20–35 minutes.
Nai Harn, Naithon and Freedom: the quiet ones
Nai Harn is a beautiful southern bay with a lake and sunsets at Promthep Cape. Naithon and Nai Yang in the north stay quiet even in season. Freedom is a small beach with clear water reached by boat or a staircase — perfect for half a day, but with no facilities.

- A red flag means no swimming: a rip current pulls you out in seconds.
- Swim where lifeguards are on duty and stay out of the water after dark.
- In the green season waves are higher and currents stronger, especially at Patong, Karon and Nai Harn.
- If a current pulls you out, swim parallel to the shore rather than against it.
- SPF 50 and shade from 11am to 3pm: you can burn under clouds too.
