A scooter is the cheapest way to get around Phuket and the most common source of trouble for tourists. Here is what it costs, what the law requires and how to avoid losing money.
Key facts
- A 125–160 cc scooter costs roughly 200–350 ฿ a day, or from 3,000–5,000 ฿ a month.
- You need an International Driving Permit for category A (or a Thai licence) — otherwise fines and no insurance payout.
- Helmets are mandatory for rider and passenger; riding without one is the most common fine.
- Do not leave your passport as a deposit — a cash deposit is the normal practice.
- Photograph and film every scratch before you ride off, or they will be charged to you.
What scooter rental costs in 2026
- Honda Click / Scoopy 125 — 200–300 ฿ a day, the everyday choice.
- Honda PCX 160 — 300–450 ฿ a day, better for two people and highways.
- Yamaha NMAX / Aerox — 350–500 ฿ a day.
- Monthly rental — from 3,000–5,000 ฿ for a 125 cc, two to three times cheaper than daily.
- Petrol is about 40–45 ฿ a litre, and a tank covers roughly 150–200 km.
Licence: what is actually required
The law requires an International Driving Permit with category A open, or a Thai licence. A national licence alone, without the international counterpart, does not qualify. Police check documents regularly at posts in Patong, Chalong and on the approaches to beaches, and fines are issued on the spot.
The real issue is not the fine but insurance: after a crash without a licence the insurer can refuse to pay, and private clinic treatment comes out of your pocket. A fracture with a hospital stay easily runs into hundreds of thousands of baht.

Deposit, passport and contract
- A normal deposit is 2,000–5,000 ฿ in cash or a passport copy — never the original.
- You need the original passport for hotels, banks and clinics — do not leave it at the rental shop.
- Check the contract states the term, price, insurance and unlimited mileage.
- Ask whether insurance is included and what it covers: often only third-party damage.
Pre-ride inspection checklist
- Film the bike from every side together with the shop employee.
- Test the brakes, indicators, brake light and horn.
- Check tyre tread and pressure — decisive on wet roads.
- Make sure there are two helmets in usable sizes.
- Photograph the fuel level and the frame number.
- Check the road tax is paid: the sticker on the plate shows the current year.
Where to ride carefully
Phuket is hilly, and the worst accident spots are the mountain descent between Patong and Kathu, the approaches to Kata and Karon, and the winding road to Naithon. Rain makes tarmac slippery instantly, especially in the first minutes of a downpour. At night potholes and dogs are hard to see, so plan longer rides for daylight.
When you do not need a scooter
If you travel with children, are wary of left-hand traffic, or stay in Patong or Phuket Town, mixing ride apps with a booked car and driver is cheaper and safer. For a day of island touring, a car with a driver often costs about the same as renting two scooters.

Frequently asked questions
How much is scooter rental in Phuket in 2026?
A Honda Click or Scoopy 125 runs about 200–300 ฿ a day and a PCX 160 about 300–450 ฿. Renting for a month drops the price to 3,000–5,000 ฿ in total.
Can I rent a scooter without a licence?
Many shops will hand over a scooter without a licence, but that does not make riding legal: police issue fines and insurers can refuse to pay after a crash. Get an International Driving Permit for category A in advance.
What is the fine for riding without a helmet in Phuket?
A no-helmet fine is issued on the spot and is the most common stop at checkpoints. A passenger without a helmet can be fined separately, so you need two helmets.
What if the rented scooter gets scratched?
Tell the rental shop immediately and do not accept a verbal repair estimate. The handover video helps: it shows which damage predates you, and settles the dispute in minutes.
