In 2026 an eSIM is the traveller standard: activate before departure, no kiosk hunting or SIM deposit.
Key facts
- eSIM works on iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, Galaxy S20 and newer — the phone must be carrier-unlocked.
- The QR code arrives by email; scan it at home over Wi-Fi, not at the airport.
- Plan validity usually starts at activation, not at purchase.
- 5–10 GB covers a week of ordinary maps and social media use.
- A physical SIM is needed for a local number for SMS codes, or for a phone without eSIM support.
Check whether your phone supports eSIM
Almost every modern smartphone supports eSIM, but the phone must not be locked to a single carrier. Checking is simple: open the mobile settings and look for Add eSIM or Add mobile plan.
- iPhone XS, XR and newer (except some mainland-China versions).
- Google Pixel 3 and newer.
- Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, plus most recent flagships.
- The phone is carrier-unlocked and on a current OS version.
Why eSIM
- QR activation in 2 minutes, works on landing.
- Your home number stays active for banks and messengers.
- Solid 5G in tourist areas, hotspot sharing.
How to activate in 2 minutes
- Buy a plan and receive a QR code by email.
- At home on Wi-Fi, scan the QR in your mobile settings.
- Label the eSIM Travel and set it as your data line.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM; keep your home SIM for calls only.
- After you land, data connects automatically.
Coverage and 5G by area
The major networks (AIS and True) cover the tourist zones well. You get reliable 5G in Patong, Phuket Town, Kata and Karon, Bang Tao and the airport. On far islands, viewpoints and in the hills it drops to 4G or slower — that is normal.
How much data to buy
- Light use (maps, messengers) — 1–2 GB per week.
- Medium (daily social media and navigation) — 5–10 GB for 1–2 weeks.
- Heavy (video, work, laptop hotspot) — 20+ GB or unlimited.
When a physical SIM still helps
If your phone is old and lacks eSIM support, or you need a local number for delivery and taxi apps with SMS codes.
Common eSIM mistakes
- Activating the eSIM a week early — the plan validity often starts at activation.
- Deleting the eSIM by accident — restoring it later is difficult.
- Forgetting to switch off home-SIM data and getting a roaming bill.
- Buying too small a bundle and running out mid-trip.
For a long stay and the whole family
For a month or longer, or for remote work, take a large or unlimited bundle and sometimes a local number. For a family the simplest setup is one eSIM per phone, with a single hotspot-friendly plan shared to a tablet and laptop.
Frequently asked questions
When should I activate the eSIM before a trip?
Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi a day before departure, but start the plan on your travel date: validity almost always counts from activation.
How many gigabytes do I need for two weeks in Phuket?
Maps, messengers and social media fit into 10–15 GB over two weeks. For video, work and laptop tethering, take 20+ GB or an unlimited plan.
Can I use a hotspot with an eSIM?
Yes — Phuket travel plans usually allow tethering, which is handy for a tablet, laptop or a second phone in the family.
Will my home number keep working?
Yes — the eSIM runs as a second line: your home SIM stays active for calls and bank SMS, while data goes through the eSIM. Switch off data roaming on the home SIM.
