The Andaman Sea off Phuket is one of the most accessible diving regions in Southeast Asia: warm water, decent visibility and dozens of sites within a couple of hours. Here is where to start if you have never been underwater before.
Key facts
- A first shore dive runs roughly 2,500–3,000 ฿ per person, including an instructor and gear.
- A two-dive boat trip costs 3,500–4,500 ฿, usually with breakfast and lunch on board.
- The Open Water certification takes 3–4 days and is valid worldwide for life.
- Some islands charge a separate eco fee: about 600 ฿ on Phi Phi, 700 ฿ at the Similans.
- Transfer from Patong, Kata, Karon and Chalong is usually already included in the tour price.
Trial dive or a course — where to start
If you are not sure diving is for you, start with a trial dive (Discover Scuba Diving): the instructor leads you literally by the hand, no certification is needed, and depth is capped at 6–12 metres. If you like it, move straight into the Open Water Diver course: 3–4 days of theory, confined-water and open-water dives, ending in a lifelong international licence good to 18 metres.
Where beginners should go
- Racha Yai — the closest island with good visibility, the classic first-dive choice.
- Phi Phi — brighter reefs, but stronger currents: better for a second or third dive than a first.
- The Similan Islands — November to April season, the best visibility in the whole Andaman Sea, but a longer ride.
- Koh Doc Mai — a middle ground between proximity and varied terrain for divers who already have a little experience.
What is included, and what is not
The standard day price includes the instructor, gear (mask, fins, tank, regulator, wetsuit), hotel transfer and meals on the boat. Billed separately: the national park eco fee (Phi Phi and the Similans both charge one at the gate), underwater camera rental, and certification if you decide to continue after your trial day.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to swim to scuba dive?
Yes, a basic ability to stay afloat is required for any dive, including a trial one. You do not need to be a strong swimmer — just comfortable and confident in the water.
How long does the Open Water course take?
Usually 3–4 days: a day or so for theory and confined-water dives (a pool), the rest in open water. Many schools offer a compressed format for travellers short on time.
Are there any health restrictions?
Asthma, heart conditions, recent ear or lung surgery — these call for a doctor’s check before diving. Most schools ask you to fill in a medical questionnaire before the first dive.
